The Butler – is an Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) concept created by UML. Besides the interesting design, what is particularily appealing about this ultra mobile PC is its proposed purpose – a personal assistant around the house. Using various modules, the Butler gains various kinds of extended functionality such as a phone, SMS, web cam, earphones, microphone, camera, and even a miniature printer for making hard copies of those ever so important notes we so often make to ourselves.
The creators of this concept also mentioned adding extended options for controlling various features around the home, such as temperature, lighting, home entertainment center, and even the kitchen oven. One thing UML failed to mention is how this would actually work. But in fact the technology that could facilitate all those applications might be just around the corner. A new wireless technology called Zigbee with a range of over 30 meters has been designed to connect to multiple low power devices simultaneously to control existing and future smart home devices as well as sensors for health and sport. Whether the Butler will ever be built or use Zigbee or some other wireless technology remains to be seen, but it is surely a sign of things to come. …Oh, Giles?
